Bachelor of Arts in Intercultural Studies

A Four-Year Program (120 credits)
Program Coordinator: Dr. Emma Karin

Learn to work effectively with people of other cultures by developing skills to study, understand and communicate the message of Christ. Prairie's Bachelor of Arts in Intercultural Studies (BAIS) includes studies in theology, anthropology and cross-culture communications to increase your understanding of God's character, His work, and the diversity of human cultures. Prairie also offers a BAIS with an Islamic Studies Major for individuals seeking preparation to work in a Muslim country or with Muslim Background Believers (MBBs). Click here for more details.

Prairie's BAIS program will equip you to:

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the tools necessary for study and understanding of the Scriptures and for the teaching of others.
  • Comprehend the character and work of God motivating the work of missions worldwide.
  • Understand the diversity of human cultures as expressed in various beliefs, behaviours, and values.
  • Nurture yourself and others in Christian maturity, working toward the growth of the Church.
  • Communicate accurately; verbally and non-verbally, whether teaching, preaching, or in daily cross-cultural living.
  • Live and minister with flexibility, contentment, and productivity in unfamiliar situations.

A highlight of this program is a 9-month internship that will lead you to 10 countries and 4 continents. You will observe and at times participate in ministry with orphans, street kids, prisoners, AIDS victims, and former prostitutes. Church planting in a creative access nation, Bible translation, and anti-human trafficking initiatives will also be on the agenda.

After weeks of travel, you will immerse yourself in a ministry of your own choosing. You will work under the leadership of local mentors as well as study the local language. This six-month Indian experience culminates with a trek through the Himalayas with your fellow GlobeTREK students. Then you will travel to the African continent and observe what God is doing there. Throughout the entire nine months, you will work towards completing thirty credits of coursework.

*The countries may change from year to year. Flexibility is expected.
Please note that the GlobeTREK fees are approx. $15,000.

TESOL Certification

An accredited Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Certificate will equip you for overseas English teaching and community-based instruction for recent immigrants and refugees. Whether God leads you overseas or Canada, TESOL Certification is a significant tool to reach those whose first language is not English.

Expanded Opportunities

Your BAIS degree will prepare you to work in a variety of cross-cultural settings including overseas missions, ministries with immigrant or diverse ethnic groups and international students. Whether your involvement focuses on missions education, communications, recreation, politics, or church ministry, you will be better prepared to contribute effectively within Christ's global Church.

The BAIS program can also be completed entirely through Prairie Distance Education (some course listings may differ). Call toll-free for the Distance Education program outline (1.800.785.4226), or e-mail

Depending on your choice of specialization you may wish to pursue an MA in Intercultural Studies, Missiology, Divinity or a Doctorate in Intercultural Studies.
