Bachelor of Arts in Intercultural Studies
Islamic Studies Major

A Four-Year Program
Program Coordinator: Dr. Emma Karin Emgård

Learn to work effectively with people of other cultures by developing skills to study, understand and communicate the message of Christ. This program is specifically aimed at Christians who are looking to better understand Islam—beliefs, culture and worldview—in order that they may be equipped for effective ministry among Muslim people groups around the world.

Prairie's Bachelor of Arts in Intercultural Studies (BAIS) includes studies in Bible & Theology, Arts & Sciences and Islamic Studies that will enable you to increase your understanding of God's character, His work, and the diversity of human cultures. Practical ministry experiences gained through outreach and internship programs will help you to grow as a servant of Christ and as a contributing member of the global Church.

Program Objectives

Prairie's BAIS program will equip you to:

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the tools necessary for study and understanding of the Scriptures and for the teaching of others.
  • Comprehend the character and work of God motivating the work of missions worldwide.
  • Understand the diversity of human cultures as expressed in various beliefs, behaviors, and values.
  • Nurture yourself and others in Christian maturity, working toward the growth of the Church.
  • Communicate accurately; verbally and non-verbally, whether teaching, preaching, or in daily cross-cultural living.
  • Live and minister with flexibility, contentment, and productivity in unfamiliar situations.

Expanded Opportunities

Your BAIS degree in Islamic Studies will prepare you to work in a variety of cross-cultural settings including overseas missions, ministries with immigrant or diverse ethnic groups and international students. Whether your involvement focuses on missions education, communications, recreation, politics, or church ministry, you will be better prepared to contribute effectively within Christ's global Church.

Depending on your choice of specialization you may wish to pursue an MA in Intercultural Studies, Missiology, Divinity or a Doctorate in Intercultural Studies.

Courses will be offered in week-long modules each semester and in summer sessions to allow for part-time community and guest learners. Students enrolled in the one-year Encounter program and two-year Intercultural Studies program can fill elective requirements with Islamic studies courses. An extended internship in the third and fourth years will allow students to put what they have learned into practice as they immerse themselves in Islamic culture.
