Elisabeth Elliot | A Servant of God

Elisabeth Elliot Gren, missionary pioneer, speaker and author passed away Monday, June 15, 2015.  After graduating from Wheaton College she attended Prairie Bible Institute for one year in 1948-1949 to further prepare for mission work.

When her husband Jim and four other young men were tragically martyred in 1956, Elisabeth remained in Ecuador, continued early missionary efforts and was instrumental in Bible translation.  In addition to encouraging a generation of Christian workers and writing over 30 books, her legacy is that of a pioneer whose life was centred on prayer and trust in God regardless of the difficult circumstances we all face.

In May of 1991, Elisabeth was featured in Prairie’s Servant Magazine.

There are about 28 reasons listed, from Scripture, as to God’s reasons for suffering. If we believe that we are loved with an everlasting love and underneath are the everlasting arms, then we can also believe that God is not going to allow suffering for nothing. The Bible tells us that He does not willingly afflict or grieve the children of men.

I think that my own response to losing my two husbands, for example, was one of trust in His love because I never have doubted that God loved me. One of my favorite verses is 2 Corinthians 4:17-18, where Paul speaks of that weight of glory. Of how the very sufferings themselves are in a mysterious way operating to produce for us a way to glory which will be beyond all comparison with our sufferings.

Elisabeth, who was battling dementia, now knows this glory first hand.

In 2004, Prairie dedicated a newly constructed prayer chapel to recognize Elisabeth’s commitment to prayer.  An inscription in the entryway reads: “Prayer is the highest privilege that God gives to any of us, and regardless what the work may be that God has called us to do, we are also called to prayer—Elisabeth Elliot.”

For the Servant interview, our closing question to Elisabeth was: “You have spent the better part of your life writing, ministering and speaking. What would you like to be remembered for?” Her response? “As a servant of God. Nothing else.”
