Brian Doerksen to Lead School of Worship Arts at Prairie

Sept 16, 2013

Prairie Bible Institute is thrilled to announce that worship leader and songwriter Brian Doerksen will be the Director of the school’s new Worship Arts Program set to launch in the fall of 2014.

Mark Maxwell, President, remarks that “Brian could not be a better fit for us as he has a deep passion for the scriptures, a heart for what God is doing globally and a commitment to mentoring and teaching the next generation.”

Brian is equally excited to begin the next chapter of his career. “Bottom line is that I love to learn and I love to teach. There have been affirmations along the way that teaching and encouraging creative worshippers is part of my calling.  Plus the thought of being around other professors who are more skilled than I am in biblical languages and theology means lots of great learning opportunities for me even as I teach.”

Brian’s songs, known and sung in churches around the world include Come, Now is the Time to Worship, Faithful One, Refiner’s Fire, & Hallelujah (Your love is amazing).

In October 2007, Brian received six Covenant Awards (Canada’s Gospel Music Association Awards) including Artist of the Year, Album of the Year& Song of the Year for Holy God. In April 2008, Brian received a Juno Award for Holy God (Contemporary Christian/Gospel Album of the Year). His first book; Make Love, Make War, published by David C. Cook came out in the summer of 2009.

His latest worship project, Level Ground is both a live DVD and CD, and features the musicians offstage, while on the stage people share their stories of grace. Level Ground won the GMA Canada award in 2011 for Worship Album of the Year and Music DVD of the Year.

Brian is looking forward to spending time in the wide-open prairie, which he sees as a place conducive to thinking and creating. “I’m looking forward to interacting with young people who are hungry to learn about worship arts and grow creatively. Together we are going to be inspired and changed by the stories of worship in the scriptures.”

Brian and his wife Joyce have been married for 29 years and have six children including two sons with special needs (Fragile X Syndrome).

Recently retired, Dr. Vernon Charter, Prairie’s Professor Emeritus of Music and Worship Arts comments that “Prairie was recognized for many years as a leader in training Christian musicians for ministry. I look forward to a revived music program here at Prairie.”
