Grandson of PBI’s Founder Appointed President

April 28, 2010

THREE HILLS, AB—During Prairie Bible Institute’s graduation service held April 24, 2010, Bruce Miller, Chairman of Prairie’s Board of Directors, announced that Mark Maxwell has been appointed as the 9th President of Prairie Bible Institute. The response to this decision was overwhelmingly affirmed as the 1,800 staff, faculty, students and guests spontaneously erupted with a standing ovation.

Mark is an alumnus of Prairie and has been involved with business and missions for his entire career. He has served on Prairie’s Board for the past 15 years, most recently as Chair. The grandson of Prairie’s co-founder L.E. Maxwell, Mark has been serving as Interim President since February. The appointment follows two months of growing endorsement around the campus and community as Mark has spent significant time providing clarity and focus on the school’s faith foundation as a Christ-centred, Bible-based, discipleship-oriented college preparing students for lifelong learning and service in ministry and missions.

“Soon after I arrived,” said Mark as he acknowledged the appointment, “we found a document hand-written by my grandfather that confirmed in my heart the direction for Prairie. It identified Prairie’s historic purpose penned in 1923: ‘To know Christ and make Him known.’ How do you improve on that?”

As Bruce Miller called Mark’s wife Elaine and daughter Jocelyn to the stage, he stated that “this is a two-for-one deal.” Not only has Elaine encouraged Mark to pursue the leadership role here, but she is a gifted teacher and leader in her own right, someone who will have a positive impact on the Prairie community.

When asked about his immediate goals, Mark responds, “This is not about me. It’s about honouring the great tradition of a school that has for 88 years brought God’s Word to life around the world. At this point we need to focus time, attention, and resources on revitalizing our campus and rebuilding our Bible College program. We want to fill our dorms and classrooms by offering programs that will challenge and provide a foundation for life-long learning. Our constituency and churches can be a real help to us in communicating our renewed emphasis on Bible training.”
